It is not uncommon for students to enter an international school with a limited level of English. At the International School of St Petersburg (ISSPb), we are committed to ensuring this does not become an obstacle to their education. We strive to create an environment where every student can comfortably adapt and gradually build confidence in their language skills.

A key component of this approach is our ESL (English as a Second Language) program, designed specifically for students whose first language is not English. It helps them not only learn the language but also succeed academically through it.

From the very beginning, students receive comprehensive language support. Based on their level, they participate in both individual and group English lessons. This tailored approach allows them to progress at their own pace, reducing stress and preventing overload.

Our teaching approach follows the principles of leading international schools and incorporates best practices from around the world. We focus on gradual immersion in the language environment: students not only learn English in the classroom but also use it in daily communication, other subjects, and group projects.

One of the key aspects of the ESL programme is the levelled reading system, which aligns books with each student’s current level of English proficiency. This approach ensures a comfortable and effective learning experience: students are not overwhelmed by complex texts but can still progress steadily. Teachers select reading materials based on an assessment of each student’s skills, including their reading level, vocabulary, and comprehension, offering books that are best suited to their stage of learning.

After finishing each book, students take part in a discussion. The teacher guides them through an analysis of the text, asking questions and ensuring they fully understand the plot, characters, and main ideas. This process not only assesses comprehension but also develops speaking and critical thinking skills in English.

When the teacher sees that a student is confidently working at their current level, they are introduced to the next level of reading. This ensures gradual and steady progression, moving from simpler texts to more complex ones. The system includes both adapted versions of classic works and contemporary texts designed specifically for English language learners. This approach not only enhances language skills but also keeps students engaged through a variety of genres and storylines.

An important aspect of this system is the use of reading journals. Students write down their thoughts about the books they have read, learn to analyse texts, and record new words and phrases. This helps them better absorb the material, develop independent thinking in English, and allows teachers to track progress and adjust their teaching methods accordingly.

Vocabulary development takes place through active practice, such as discussions, assignments, and group activities. Students apply new words in meaningful contexts, which makes the learning process both engaging and effective.

With this support system, English becomes not a challenge but a powerful tool for learning, communication, and realising each child’s potential. It allows students to gradually overcome the language barrier and smoothly adapt to studying in English.
