Academic Values

The International School's curriculum is based on the English National Curriculum (ENC). This curriculum is considered by many to be the gold standard as it is rigorous, respected and recognised throughout the world. Our curriculum is adapted to provide a broader international perspective and includes the study of Russian language and heritage.

The international programme at ISSPb is built on the principles of the English National Curriculum (ENC), while fully taking into account the requirements of the Russian education system. ENC provides a clear structure for the learning process, ensuring progressive development of critical thinking, independence, and in-depth knowledge across core subjects. Graduates of ENC-based programmes consistently gain admission to leading universities worldwide, including Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College, Ivy League institutions, and top universities across Europe and Asia.
All teaching in the international programme is conducted in English. At the same time, the curriculum integrates the study of the Russian language, Russian history, culture, and traditions of the multinational country. The programme culminates in successful completion of the international IGCSE and A Level examinations, while also offering the opportunity to prepare for and take the OGE (Russian State Final Examination) in parallel. As a result, the education received at the International School of St. Petersburg meets both international and Russian educational standards.

Stages of the International Programme

The International School of St. Petersburg offers a complete educational pathway from 3 to 18 years old, strictly following the stages of the ENC.

· EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) — Ages 3 to 5 (Nursery, Reception) Children learn through play, exploration, and interaction: they develop social skills, fine and gross motor skills, and become familiar with initial mathematical and language concepts. This foundational stage instils a love of learning and self-confidence.

· KS1 (Key Stage 1) — Ages 5–7 (Years 1–2) The main focus is on mastering reading, writing, and arithmetic. Children learn to work independently and collaboratively, complete creative projects, and build essential study skills.

· KS2 (Key Stage 2) — Ages 7–11 (Years 3–6) Knowledge deepens in core subjects: mathematics, English, natural sciences, history, and geography. Analytical thinking and presentation skills are developed.

· KS3 (Key Stage 3) — Ages 11–14 (Years 7–9) A broad range of subjects helps each child discover their interests and talents. Students learn to analyse information, argue their position, and prepare for specialisation choices in later stages.

· KS4 (Key Stage 4) — Ages 14–16 (Years 10–11) Intensive preparation for international IGCSE examinations in 6–9 selected subjects.

· KS5 ( Key Stage 5/ A Levels) — Ages 16–18 (Years 12–13) In-depth study of 4 subjects. The main emphasis is on critical analysis, independent research, and university preparation.

Early Years/Foundation Stage

EYFS

Our first school stage is the early childhood education stage for children aged 3 to 5 years. Children at this stage learn best when they gain knowledge first-hand, through meaningful interactions with others, physical activity and play.

Primary

From Year 1 to Year 6

Primary school is for children aged 5 to 11 years. The goal of this phase of our program is to teach basic skills and abilities in reading, writing and mathematics, as well as to create a strong foundation for subsequent learning in a variety of subjects.

Secondary

From Year 7 to Year 9

From 11 to 14 years of age, students study a wide range of subjects such as music, mathematics, science, English. Upon reaching the age of 14, students begin 2 years of preparation for the IGCSE exams, with Russiann natives also able to study for their OGE.

IGCSE

From Year 10 to Year 11

Students aged 14–16 at KS4 choose subjects according to their interests and prepare for the internationally recognised IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) examinations. Core subjects include English, Mathematics and Science.

A Level

From Year 12 to Year 13

KS5 is the stage of academic specialisation and intensive preparation for admission to the world’s top universities. Students aged 16–18 select 3–4 subjects for in-depth study and sit A-Level examinations. These results are recognised by the majority of leading universities.

Music lessons

Music at ISSPb is not an elective but one of the compulsory elements of the international programme, aimed at brain development and building strong character. Lessons improve memory, concentration, emotional intelligence, and even academic performance.
For all ages: playing instruments, singing, improvisation, and exploring styles and eras. Concerts, masterclasses, and performances — both in-school and at external events — foster confidence, discipline, and a lifelong love and interest in music.

Art

«If I could say it in words, there would be no need to paint.» Art is one of the strongest aspects of our program. From age 4, children explore drawing, painting, sculpture, design, and digital art.

They study great masters, styles, composition, colour, and proportion. Lessons develop creativity, observation, patience, and the ability to express emotions. Art helps children better understand themselves and the world around them.

Physical Education and Sports

Physical education is a powerful tool for shaping a healthy lifestyle, strong character, and essential life competencies. In our school, physical education and sports hold a special place: high-quality PE lessons, a wide range of team and individual disciplines, and regular participation in inter-school tournaments as well as city and regional competitions. Children learn to work in a team, set goals, push beyond their limits, demonstrate leadership, and support one another.

Drama and School Theatre

Theatre is a highly effective means of personal growth. Performances train clear and expressive speech, help overcome the fear of public speaking, develop emotional intelligence, and strengthen teamwork skills.
Classes engage visual, verbal, and kinesthetic perception, positively influencing memory development, creative thinking, and social abilities. Students become co-authors of scripts, rehearse roles, create costumes and sets, and step onto the stage. Through this process, children gain valuable experience, diverse knowledge, and skills that stay with them for life-supporting their academic success, university admissions, and future careers.
