The Russian Curriculum

We understand the importance of our native Russian students continuing and learning studies in their local language. From Grade 1, we offer them the ability to take end of the year attestation in order to pass their exams in the subjects required under state legislation.

Russian State Curriculum at International School of St. Petersburg (ISSPb)

The International School of St. Petersburg (ISSPb) offers an additional Russian State Curriculum, enabling students to combine an internationally recognized education with studies that meet the educational standards of the Russian Federation.

We ensure that students who may wish to transfer to a Russian school or continue their education in Russia are fully prepared for this transition. From the very beginning of their studies, children learn the Russian language and have the opportunity to complete annual academic assessments as well as prepare for and take the OGE (Basic State Examination) and USE (Unified State Examination) in partnership with an accredited Russian school.

Education in Accordance with the Federal State Educational Standards (FSES)

The Russian curriculum is delivered in full compliance with the Federal State Educational Standards (FSES) of the Russian Federation, including:

Federal State Educational Standard for Preschool Education (FSES PE);
Federal State Educational Standard for Primary General Education (FSES PGE);
Federal State Educational Standard for Basic General Education (FSES BGE).

This ensures full compliance with Russian educational requirements and provides students with the opportunity to obtain officially recognized Russian state educational certificates.

ISSPb Russian Programme

Russian Language

All students study Russian Language or Russian as an Additional Language (RAL) four times a week.

Primary School (Grades 1–4 | Ages 7–10)

Following their main international programme, students additionally study:

Mathematics;
Literary Reading;
The World Around Us (Environmental Studies).

Middle School (Grades 5–8 | Ages 11–15)

The programme includes:

Algebra and Geometry;
Russian History;
Literature;
Geography;
Chemistry.

Academic Progress Monitoring

Lessons are taught by experienced teachers and invited specialists, including certified OGE and USE examination experts.

Throughout the academic year, students benefit from:

regular assessments and testing;
continuous academic progress monitoring;
maintenance of academic records;
individual progress reports and performance analysis.

Interim Assessment and State Examinations

Interim assessment is conducted in cooperation with our accredited partner school.

ISSPb students take the OGE examinations in:

Russian Language;
Mathematics;
English Language;
one elective subject.

Upon successful completion of the OGE examinations, students receive the Certificate of Basic General Education issued by the Russian Federation.

Students may also prepare for and take the USE (Unified State Examination), leading to the Certificate of Secondary General Education, the official Russian secondary school diploma.

Test of Russian as a Foreign Language (TRKI / TORFL)

International students at ISSPb take the Test of Russian as a Foreign Language (TRKI/TORFL) at one of the leading state universities in St. Petersburg authorized by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation to administer the examination.

Upon successful completion, students receive an official internationally recognized TORFL certificate, confirming their level of Russian language proficiency. The certificate is accepted by Russian educational institutions and may be used when applying to schools, colleges, and universities, as well as for official confirmation of Russian language competence.

Two Diplomas — Greater Opportunities

The Russian programme is offered as an additional educational pathway for students of the International School of St. Petersburg (ISSPb).

It enables students to:

continue their education at Russian schools and universities;
study simultaneously under both the International and Russian educational systems;
enjoy greater flexibility when choosing their academic pathway after Grades 9 and 11;
obtain a Russian State Certificate alongside their international school qualifications.

Studying under both educational systems gives students the confidence and flexibility to pursue higher education and future careers in Russia or anywhere in the world, while keeping the widest possible range of academic opportunities open.
