Besides the excellent academic learning, our school is very passionate about sport. We compete in swimming, cross country, football, basketball, netball and volleyball. Feel free to come and check out our trophy cabinet.
Approaching, is our next games of basketball, netball and volleyball against ISM (International School Moscow), so I interviewed the players and their trainers.
Questions
- How do you feel about playing for the school, and why do you feel that way?
- How would you encourage your team to win?
- What is your motivation to lead your team to victory?
- Do you think that you are going to win?
- What are your predictions?
Basketball
Mr. Dmitry Vishnevsky is the trainer of the basketball team; ‘You must play like a challenger to win. Your philosophy should be simple: when the bell rings – start fighting and don’t give up until the final buzzer.’
The basketball team is as follows:
Kas, Zeynep, Masha, Polina K, Alina, Polina Zh and Alba.
Kas, team player
- I am feeling very enthusiastic because I have been practicing diligently and I am truly determined to support and elevate the team’s performance.
- I would express my feelings directly to their faces, encouraging them to work harder until they felt emotional. Just kidding, of course! I genuinely believe it is all in good fun at the end of the day.
- Our source of motivation is me.
- Of course we are going to win. I am very sure that we will perform exceptionally well on the court, and ISM will not want to face us again in the future.
Netball
Ms. Chloe Herman is the trainer of the netball team. She has taken great care of answering the questions.
I personally want to comment that Ms. Chloe Herman is a person who not only excels at sport and gives plenty of encouragement to the players, but also to the whole school itself.
The Netball teams are as follows:
Primary – Baris (Goalkeeper), Angelina (Goal Defense), Alina (Wing Defense), Katya (Center), Oscar (Wing Attack), Theodore (Goal Attack) and Maximilian (Goal Shooter).
Secondary – Nikola (Goalkeeper), Nikita (Goal Defense), Polina z (Wing Defense), Deniz (Centre), Kirill (Wing Attack), Masha (Goal Attack), Evan (Goal Shooter).

- Mush, mush, mush Huskies! I don’t think we need much encouragement – it’s always a pleasure to accompany ISSPb students to sporting competitions as they are intrinsically motivated to compete at their best possible level. There’s a high level of expectation and pride in representing the school – the personalised sports kit always seems to have a positive impact too.
- To have the final reward of a trophy after all the hard work and practice is always a bonus. The fact that we are able to provide strong opposition for a school such as ISM who have many more students than us is motivation enough to prove the sporting prowess of ISSPb.
- I will comment on the netball results. In terms of the younger team, what we lack in height, we make up for in speed, finding space, the ability to read the game and some strong passing ability. With the arrival of Katya – who has an understanding of the game – I feel we will be a formidable force as she directs play through Oscar into Theodore and Maximilian’s safe hands, providing us with more than enough goals. Supported by Angelina, Baris and Alina in defense, as long as we demonstrate some aggression, I would find it bewildering if we didn’t find ourselves in the final. With illness, we have no substitutions so it will be interesting to see how much stamina we will have.
The older team possesses all of the attributes above, alongside height and some very strong defenders in Nikita G and Nikola. ISM is going to be hard pressed to manage to reach their goal, let alone score points. In terms of attack, Deniz – our centre – will be drawing on Masha and Kirill to feed it into Evan, who on a good day, finds it difficult to miss. I think as always ISM are going to provide some impressive set plays and we look forward to seeing the results.
Angelina Signer
- I am playing in the netball and basketball teams.
- I feel exited to play for school because not all students have the opportunity to go to that many competitions.
- I would encourage my team to win be giving them some feedback and just saying that they are doing well.
- I would say the same as the third question plus saying that we will manage to win.
- I think everyone has a chance to win if they will try hard and believe in them self.
Volleyball
Mr. David Signer is the trainer of the volleyball team. He has taken great care of answering the questions, the answers to which you can see below.
Volleyball team as follows: Polina Z, Kas, Nikita, Deniz, Masha, Nikola, Polina K and Alba.
Mr. David Signer
- «I’d encourage the players by keeping spirits high and reminding everyone to have fun while giving their best effort. Teamwork and communication are super important, so I’d make sure we support each other, stay positive, and play smart. A little bit of cheering and motivation can go a long way!»
- «My biggest motivation is seeing my team work together and improve. Winning is great, but what really matters is putting in the effort, learning from mistakes, and pushing ourselves to do better. Helping the players feel confident and enjoy the game is what drives me the most.»
- «I think we’ve got a great chance of winning if we stay focused and work together. It’s going to be a tough game, but I believe in the team! No matter what happens, they’ll give it their all, have fun, and learn from the experience.»
Polina Zhivnovodenko
- «I feel like I’m sporty and like someone who knows how to work in a team.»
- «I would set our team up for victory by giving them confidence.»
- «My motivation is to win.»
- «I think we can win; we have the most friendly and strong team, we often win.»
«Just like in everything, whether its examinations, sport or putting on an event, we want to be the best. I know that everyone who represents ISSPb expects nothing less than the best and the training and commitment will help lead us to put in some fantastic performances in the search for victory. GO HUSKIES!»
Mr. Leon Clarke, ISSPB’s academic director.
